Kupu whakataki / Whakamārama mō te kaupapa
Kāore i te tino mōhiotia te whakatinanatanga reo a ngā ākonga kei kura reo Māori e ako ana. E rima ngā kura ka mahi ngātahi mātou ki te tūhura i te reo ahurea Māori (Māori social language) me te reo mātauranga (academic language) o ngā ākonga. Ka aromatawaitia ō rātou reo, ka tātari ngātahitia hoki. Ka wānanga pakirehuatia ngā tauira kawenga reo o ētahi marautanga. Ko te tūmanako, ka kitea mehemea ka ikeike, ka matatau, ka māia ake te ākonga inā haeretahi te aro atu ki te reo ahurea me te reo marautanga. Little is known about whether the Māori language proficiency of students in Māori medium settings is sufficient to achieve the learning goals of marautanga. Together with five kura we will explore the social and academic language proficiency of students. Student Māori language proficiency and curriculum content knowledge will be assessed and collaboratively analysed. We also focus on developing teacher curriculum knowledge and the specific language discourses associated with two marautanga. The goal is to see if simultaneous/ dual attention to social language and curriculum content advances students’ linguistic capability and confidence in order to achieve academic success.

Ko te tumanako ka mōhiotia mehemea ka hua ake te Mātauranga Māori mā te huarahi ako mā te reo Māori i te kōtuitanga o te reo ahurea me te reo mātauranga marautanga, otirā, kia mōhiotia:
1. Te whakatinanatanga reo ahurea o ngā ākonga i te akomanga me te papatākaro?
2. Te whakatinanatanga a ngā ākonga i te reo ahurea i roto i a rātou mahi mātauranga i te reo Māori.
3. Te nekehanga reo, ka puta kia whanakehia te mātauranga marautanga me te reo o ngā ākonga e ako ana mā te reo Māori.
4. Ngā nekehanga reo ka tūpono ki te arohia ngā pūtoi ako reo rua ki roto i ngā whakaakoranga marautanga.
5. Te āhua o te kōtuitanga o te reo ahurea me te reo mātauranga, i te nekehanga reo.
He aha tēnei rangahau i hira ai?
He mea nui te mōhio ki te whakatinanatanga reo Māori a ngā ākonga kei kura reo Māori e ako ana. Kua pakeke mai ngā whakatipuranga o ngā pā harakeke kura, whakaako mā te reo, nā reira, mā rātou anō mā ngā Raukura me ngā Manu Taiko nei ō rātou anō reo ahurea (Māori social language) me ō ratou reo mātauranga (academic language) e kōrero.
Te mahi ka mahia e mātou
- Te whakawhanaunga, ka whakamārama i te kaupapa ki ngā kura.
- Te kohi raraunga mā te whakamahi i ngā taputapu aromatawai Kaiaka Reo-ā-Waha me te Kaiaka Reo-ā-tuhi, me ērā o ACTFL IPA ka hangaia mō te Tikanga ā Iwi me te Ngā Toi.
- Te whai wāhi o ngā tamariki tūākana hei kairangahau.
- Te kohikohi, te ketuketu me whakaatu i ēnei ki te kura. Kua tīmata ki te tātari i ngā raraunga o ngā aromatawai.
- Te tātari i ngā raraunga hei taunaki whakarite i ngā kaupapa whakangungu hei hiki i ngā reo ahurea me ngā reo mātauranga marautanga.
- Ka whakangungua ngā kaiako, kua whāngaia te reo ahurea me te reo mātauranga marautanga ki ngā ākonga.
